Muhammad Sarmad Ali is a postdoctoral researcher in the Biocomputing and Developmental Systems research group at the University of Limerick. He is working on a Huawei-funded research project, Wireless Automatic Compiler Tuning (WACT). The project aims to enhance software performance through compiler flag optimisation, utilising a host of machine learning and software performance engineering approaches.

Sarmad completed his PhD in Mar 2023 under the supervision of Prof. Conor Ryan, working on a Science Foundation Ireland (SFI)-funded research project, Automatic Design of Digital Circuits (ADDC). His research focused on applying evolutionary computing, especially Grammatical Evolution, in automating the design and development of software systems. His PhD thesis explored how grammar analytics can be helpful in automatically designing and refining grammar which can define the solution space.

Sarmad had previously worked in academia for nearly 10 years as a Lecturer in computer science at various universities in Pakistan (Namal, GIKI). Recently, in Ireland, he has taught at the University of Limerick and Dundalk Institute of Technology.
