Engaged Research involves Lero researchers engaging with stakeholders, policy makers and the general public, and is inspired by the Campus Engaged Research Programme within the Irish Universities Association. Our aims for the Engages Research strategic area are aligned with the Campus Engage aims which are “to improve understanding and investigate an issue of public interest or concern, advanced with community partners rather than for them”. This area would also incorporate research initiatives such as Public and Patient Involvement in Research (PPI), Citizen Science and Responsible Research and Innovation. The citizen is at the core of these programmes with societal benefit of the research being the desired outcome. Examples of Engaged Research are being undertaken in the area of smart communities/smart cities, health wellbeing and human performance, and connected and autonomous vehicles and these will be expanded to include fintech, govtech and agritech and food application domains.
