As part of EU Code Week in October Lero hosted two programming workshops in St. Mary's Secondary School, Corbally Limerick and in Presentation Convent Mitchelstown Cork. Europe Code Week is a grassroots initiative which aims to bring coding and digital literacy to everybody in a fun and engaging way.

Professor Mike Hinchey, director of Lero – the Irish Software Research Centre - has been elected President-Elect of IFIP (the International Federation for Information Processing). Limerick-born Professor Hinchey will be the first Irishman to be elected President of the organisation since it was established under the auspices of UNESCO in 1960. 

Best paper awards have been presented to Dr Fergal McCaffery and Dr Silvana Togneri MacMahon from Lero @ DkIT for papers presented at The First Int

Limerick headquartered Lero - the Irish Software Research Centre, has helped Ireland win a prestigious international technology conference. Ireland beat off stiff competition to host the 37^th International Conference on Information Systems (ICIS), which will take place in the Convention Centre, Dublin in December 2016. An estimated 1,500 global delegates and their partners are expected to generate up to €2m to the local economy.

Early teaching of mathematics and technology subjects needs to be reviewed if the gender gap in technology is to be addressed. This was stated by Professor Mike Hinchey, director of Lero, the Irish Software Research Centre at the publication of the organisation’s annual report.

“There is no reason why women cannot be as successful as men in computing but evidence suggests that many girls are turned off at an early age by its geeky, anti-social, overly masculine, nerdy image.”
