Deirdre Kilbane
Academic
Dr. Deirdre Kilbane is a Senior Research Fellow at the Telecommunications Software and Systems Group (TSSG), Waterford Institute of Technology, and an Adjunct Lecturer at the School of Physics in University College Dublin. Dr. Kilbane received a BSc in Experimental Physics along with a PGD in Education from University College Dublin (UCD) and a PhD in Mathematical Physics from the National University of Ireland Maynooth. Prior to joining the TSSG, she was a Marie Curie Research Fellow of ultrafast nanoplasmonics in the Aeschlimann Group, University of Kaiserslautern, Germany. She joined the TSSG in 2018 and currently collaborates on the EU Horizon2020 CYBELE project (HPC-enabled Data Analytics Platform for the AgriTech Sector) and is Principal Investigator of the Science Foundation Ireland Nanomote project. The main research interests of Dr. Deirdre Kilbane lie in developing implantable medical devices and enabling personalised medicine via the internet of bio-nano-things and AI. This involves creating the nanonetwork communication architecture to support wireless communication between intrabody nanomotes and wearable devices. Dr. Kilbane is also interested in quantum technologies for space research with a particular focus on quantum communication and developing quantum sensors for earth observation. Deirdre has 55 peer-reviewed publications at the highest level in Science, Nano Letters and Physical Review X. She has presented invited talks at several high profile international conferences such as SPIE Photonics West, SPIE Optics+Photonics and META. Her research combines nanotechnology, artificial intelligence and quantum communication to develop innovative technologies for the agriculture, healthcare, and information and communication technology (ICT) sectors.
